In Oregon and Washington, the push to “electrify everything” is sparking debate and leading to some big questions. Electricity demand is climbing faster than ever, from electric vehicles and energy-smart buildings to booming data centers and semiconductor plants. Ensuring grid reliability while advancing energy initiatives presents unique challenges the electrical industry is ready to tackle.

The Daily Journal of Commerce recently featured NECA-IBEW Local 48’s article, Electrification in Oregon and Washington Sparks Mixed Reactions. The article explores the factors contributing to rising energy demand and current grid capability.

The Pacific Northwest has an enviable renewable energy foundation, with hydropower leading the way and wind installations contributing thousands of megawatts. Yet the grid that delivers this power isn’t keeping up with the pace of change. Transmission upgrades move slowly, weather events are increasingly unpredictable, and costs are already rising for consumers.

The electrical industry consensus? Electrification is here and will continue to expand. The focus, now, should center on how quickly infrastructure and workforce training can catch up.

Electrical professionals are already stepping up. From installing EV charging stations and smart-grid systems to integrating renewable energy into existing frameworks, skilled union workers are the linchpin of this transition. Partnerships like NECA-IBEW Local 48 offer members advanced training programs and resources, ensuring an adaptable workforce.
