DJC Features NECA/IBEW: What’s Shaping the PNW Electrical Industry in 2026
As the electrical industry enters 2026, contractors and stakeholders across Oregon and Washington are navigating a market defined by shifting demand, emerging technology and long-term electrification goals. While near-term pressures are real, the Pacific Northwest electrical industry is responding with creativity, adaptability, and a strategic eye on the future.
The Daily Journal of Commerce recently featured NECA-IBEW Local 48’s article, Evolving Technology and Long-Term Electrification Goals, which takes a close look at where the regional electrical market stands heading into the new year and what contractors can expect in the months ahead.
The broader construction landscape is sending mixed signals. Commercial construction is projected to see modest national growth, with healthcare, retail, and hospitality driving much of that activity. At the same time, federal infrastructure projects have slowed, material costs remain high, and residential housing starts dropped significantly in mid-2025, pushing demand toward remodels, retrofits, and phased developments rather than new ground-up projects.
Even so, several electrical segments are positioned for meaningful growth. Building electrification retrofits, EV charging infrastructure, and expanding data center development are creating consistent opportunities for skilled electricians. Aging public and commercial facilities are also driving panel replacements, lighting conversions, controls upgrades, and automation projects that require experienced union labor.
Looking ahead, the electrical market is evolving in ways that reward adaptability. Digital tools are becoming standard in project management and estimating, and roles in maintenance, energy services, and design-assist work are growing in prominence. Union contractors and workforce leaders are well-positioned to not just keep pace with change, but to meet these demands and set the standard for the industry’s future.
